19 Powerful Affirmations for Depression and Anxiety

Affirmations | Depression

If you are struggling with depression, you may find yourself caught in negative thoughts about yourself, your future, or your ability to get through the day.

Positive affirmations cannot replace professional mental health support, but they can be a simple way to practise more compassionate self-talk and challenge some of the negative thoughts that depression can bring.

You do not have to fully believe an affirmation for it to be useful. Sometimes, starting with a thought that feels a little more hopeful or realistic is enough.

1. I am not alone.

Even when depression makes me feel isolated, I deserve support and connection.

2. This feeling does not define my entire life.

What I am feeling right now is real, but it does not have to determine my future.

3. I choose hope, even when hope feels difficult.

I do not need to feel positive all the time to believe that things can change.

4. I deserve happiness and peace.

I am worthy of moments that feel meaningful, peaceful, and enjoyable.

5. I do not have to control what other people think of me.

I can focus on caring for myself instead of constantly worrying about how I am perceived.

6. I can take things one day at a time.

I do not need to solve everything today.

7. Progress matters more than perfection.

Small steps are still steps forward.

8. I am allowed to have difficult days.

Having a difficult day does not mean I am failing.

9. I can give myself time to heal.

I do not have to rush my progress or compare my journey with someone else’s.

10. I deserve to speak to myself with kindness.

I can treat myself with the same patience and compassion I would offer someone I care about.

11. Rest does not make me lazy.

Taking time to rest is part of caring for myself.

12. I am worthy of self-respect.

My struggles do not make me less deserving of care or understanding.

13. I deserve to take care of myself.

Even small acts of self-care matter.

14. I can ask for help when I need it.

I do not have to handle everything on my own.

15. I will be patient with myself today.

Healing does not happen overnight, and I am allowed to take things slowly.

16. One difficult day does not erase my progress.

A setback does not mean I am back at the beginning.

17. I am stronger than I sometimes realize.

I can keep taking small steps through difficult moments.

18. I am worthy of love and connection.

Depression may make me feel disconnected, but I still deserve supportive and meaningful relationships.

19. I matter.

My worth is not determined by my productivity, achievements, or how I feel on my hardest days.

How to Use Affirmations When You Are Depressed

You can write an affirmation in a journal, save one as a phone reminder, repeat it quietly to yourself, or place it somewhere you will see it throughout the day.

You can also adapt an affirmation so that it feels realistic to you.

For example, if “I am happy” feels impossible to believe when you are depressed, you could try:

“I am open to the possibility that things can feel different one day.”

The goal is not to force yourself to feel positive.

Instead, affirmations can be used as a reminder to respond to yourself with more compassion when negative thoughts become overwhelming.

Remember: Affirmations Are Not a Replacement for Support

If you are experiencing ongoing symptoms of depression, affirmations alone may not be enough.

Depression is a real mental health condition that can affect your mood, sleep, energy, concentration, relationships, and everyday life. Speaking with a trusted adult, school counsellor, doctor, or mental health professional can help you understand what you are experiencing and find appropriate support.

You do not have to wait until things become unbearable before reaching out.

And if an affirmation feels impossible to believe today, that is okay.

Sometimes healing begins with something much smaller.
